Welcome to Dr J. A. Chau Dental Surgeons. OUR GOAL is to provide you with the best possible dental care. OUR DENTISTS have over 100 years combined experience. OUR PRACTICE has serviced Hobart for over 40 years.

About Our Practice

History

After working for the government for 3 years, Dr. Chau purchased a practice at 163 Macquarie Street and commenced private practice on the 12th February 1969.

The practice has gone from strength to strength and in 1980 Dr. Chau relocated to larger premises at 149 Macquarie Street and also opened a second practice at 1 Scott Street, Bellerive.

The practice has 6 Dental Surgeons and 28 staff (consisting of full-time, part-time and casual staff). Some of these staff have worked for the practice for more than 30 years. These staffing levels enable Dr. Chau to successfully run the practices in the most efficient manner. All aspects of dentistry are performed with the utmost professional care, skill and leading edge technology.

Our dental team commits to continuing education courses by attending seminars and lectures to keep up to date with the latest advancements of dentistry.

Our Services

Our goal is to provide you with the best possible dental care. We strive to provide the best treatment for you, and to uphold a standard we would expect for our own dental care. If you have any questions or suggestions about our services or procedures, please feel free to discuss them with us. Most inquiries can be answered by one of our trained staff during office hours.

Preventative Dental

We believe we have a duty to ensure that you have been shown what is required to keep your mouth free of plaque. During your first course of treatment, we will discuss the management of brushing and flossing your teeth effectively, and ensure that you know how to clean any dentures that you may be wearing.

We are more than happy to repeat any oral hygiene instructions and we will monitor your plaque control throughout the course of treatment and subsequently at your periodical continual care.

Preventative procedures that we offer include scaling and cleaning, regular fluoride applications, pit and fissure sealants and mouth guard construction.

Services Provided

Dentistry’s constant innovation and technological advancement demands practitioners continuously update and replenish their knowledge and skills. Our dentists are up to date with the latest techniques and perform:

restorative and cosmetic dentistry
endodontic (root canal)
periodontic (gum treatment)
prosthodontic (crowns, bridges and dentures)
implants (replacement of missing teeth)
oral surgery
Nitrous Oxide (laughing gas) sedation is available in our surgeries for any patient who experiences anxiety with dental procedures.

If it is necessary for a patient to have treatment under general anaesthesia, this can be organised through Day Surgery. For more complicated cases, we can refer to a specialist.

When we plan dental treatment we aim for the best outcomes for your dental health. However, we understand that life is a great balancing act and can, in certain circumstances, develop a compromise treatment plan with a view to achieving your final goal in the future.

Restorative & Cosmetic Dentistry

To conserve maximum tooth structure, our dentists employ the latest techniques and materials including bonded composite (tooth coloured) restorations. As we recognise the importance of our patients smile to their overall feeling of well-being and confidence, we offer a variety of options to give the best cosmetic result possible.

Our patients can simply have their natural teeth whitened or have their smile enhanced with direct or indirect veneers, crowns, bridges, implants and tooth coloured restorations.

Endodontics

Endodontics refers to the dental specialty dealing with the inside and roots of your teeth. The most common endodontic procedure is root canal therapy which saves infected teeth from removal and in most cases the colour of the tooth is retained. We have dentists qualified to perform a range of endodontic treatments.

Implants

Our dentists provide comfortable, fully functional and natural looking dental implants to replace missing teeth.

Crowns & Bridges

Dental crowns fit over the top of damaged teeth to retain strength and colour whilst bridges are multiple prosthetic teeth which are fitted to replace those missing teeth. Both crowns and bridges are permanently fixed – they don’t have to be removed for cleaning like dentures.

Wisdom Teeth Removal

Few people are lucky enough to get through life without the pain and discomfort of infected or impacted (growing in the wrong direction) wisdom teeth. These complications can cause major dental health problems and impacted third molars (wisdom teeth) often cause crowding which can push previously straight teeth out of alignment into poor position in the arch (jaw). It is not uncommon to have wisdom teeth removed and in most cases, removal can be completed under local anaesthetic in the dental surgery – though sometimes a general anaesthetic and day surgery are required.

Our dentists can provide or organise the removal of these teeth, ensuring that at least the administrative side of the process is relatively painless!

Office Management

Parking

Metered parking is available around the block of the city practice. We recommend patients attending the city practice should allow adequate parking time. If a long appointment is required, Victoria Street has 1 hour parking available or Centrepoint multi-story carpark off Harrington Street is only a short walk away. Unfortunately our staff cannot attend parking meters.

Bellerive has off street parking and parking is available behind the practice. Wheel chair access is available in Bellerive.

Fees

Our fees are determined for a particular service or procedure after considering the time, degree of difficulty and the type of materials involved. These fees may vary from time to time and from tooth to tooth of the same person. To avoid any misunderstandings, you are encouraged to enquire about current fees. An estimate of current treatment plan will be available to you. This will give you the opportunity to discuss the treatment or any alternative that may be more suitable to you.

Appointments

To welcome new patients on their first appointment, we would appreciate that they arrive 10 minutes early to complete a “Medical history and patient information card”. Except for emergency cases, you may expect us to be on time. To change an appointment we require 24 hours notice so that the time reserved for you may be made available to other patients.

Accounts

Your account will be itemised, the patient’s name, coding, procedures performed and our fee. All accounts are due and payable at the time the services are rendered. It is not our policy to extend credit to patients. Payments may be made by cash, cheque, MasterCard, Visa or Eftpos.

We operate the HICAPS system allowing most private health fund rebates to be claimed on the same day for the convenience of our patients.

Facilities

We are proud to use all high-quality Siemens medical equipment. We have the facility to take panoramic (OPG) and intra oral x-rays for diagnosis at your visit. We also have the facility to produce high quality films in a few minutes with our latest computerised processor.

Infection Control

The use of Ultrasonics and Autoclaving has long been considered the best way to clean and sterilize dental instruments and handpieces. We operate under the ADA guidelines. Much of our material is one-use only and is disposed of after your treatment. When choosing the materials that we use, the procedures that we employ, the laboratories that we deal with and the equipment we use, we only have one consideration – that they be the best available for their particular purpose.

In order to keep informed of current therapy and procedures all our staff regularly attend relevant seminars and continuous education programs.
