GENERAL DENTISTRY

FILLINGS

Fillings are required when a tooth is broken, cracked or has a cavity (dental decay). Getting a filling is now a simple, painless procedure and you’ll feel back to normal in no time.

Cavities are caused by bacterial plaque fermenting sugars and producing acids. These acids slowly dissolve the tooth’s enamel which then becomes porous and eventually breaks down forming a cavity.

White fillings
Keep your smile white with tooth-coloured fillings and no-one will ever know they’re there. Made from composite resin, white fillings are durable and are bonded to the teeth. Whether you need a new filling, or want to refill an old one, white fillings are both an aesthetic and practical choice.

Amalgam fillings
Sometimes a white filling can’t be used if there isn’t enough enamel to bond to, or if there is too much moisture. In these cases, amalgam fillings are used. Dentists have used amalgam successfully for many years and it’s also a less expensive option for patients seeking affordability.

CROWNS AND BRIDGES

Crowns
As we get older, teeth can become worn down, or begin cracking and breaking. If you have a tooth that is worn, chipped or broken on the surface, but the root is ok, your dentist may recommend a crown (also known as a ‘cap’).

A dental crown fully covers the visible part of the tooth and can be used for both restorative and cosmetic purposes. Porcelain is the most aesthetically-pleasing material, but sometimes your dentist may need to use metal (eg gold), depending on your individual circumstances.

You’ll need two appointments when you have a crown procedure. The first appointment involves preparing your tooth, taking a mould and fitting a temporary crown. During the second appointment, the final crown is secured into place.

Crowns improve the appearance of your natural teeth while also providing strength and stability to the tooth. A crown may be used where there is extensive decay, discolouration or fractures. They are also used when missing teeth are replaced with a bridge.

Bridges
If you’re missing a tooth, it’s a good idea to consider filling the space because gaps can cause surrounding teeth to move out of position and make your mouth more susceptible to decay and gum disease.

A dental bridge is a permanent artificial tooth which can be inserted to fill the gap. It involves the teeth on either side of the gap being crowned with the artificial tooth being fixed to these crowns.

Implants
Missing teeth can not only make you feel self-conscious about your smile, but they can also cause discomfort, headaches, jaw pain and teeth movement. If your gums and awbone are healthy, dental implants can provide a permanent and aesthetically-pleasing solution.

Implants are a good choice if you have one or more missing teeth and don’t want removable dentures. If you are missing a single tooth, the procedure involves replacing the root with an implant and securing a crown on top. If several teeth are missing, you can combine dental implants and a porcelain bridge to create a natural-looking result.

Replacing all of your teeth
For a brand new permanent smile, talk to us about a full arch denture that is permanently supported with dental implants.

VENEERS

Veneers can have an amazing effect on your appearance and confidence. If you have discoloured, chipped, crooked or ‘gappy’ teeth, veneers can drastically improve your smile.

Made from impressions of your natural teeth, veneers are very thin, shell-like covers that are bonded to your teeth for an absolutely beautiful and natural-looking result. Veneers are incredibly strong, require minimal natural tooth to be removed and generally cost less than crowns. They are a very popular choice for beautiful smiles as they won’t stain and they look very natural.

TEETH WHITENING

Many of us love our coffee and red wine, but unfortunately these indulgences can discolour teeth over time. To restore your smile to a sparkling white, talk to us about our popular teeth whitening
procedure.

Our whitening kit provides everything you need to whiten your teeth at home. We’ll create a custom bleaching tray for you, in which you place the whitening gel. Wear the bleaching tray for several hours a day and your smile will gradually brighten over the following fortnight.

It’s that easy!

ROOT CANAL TREATMENT

Once upon a time, the words ‘root canal’ struck fear in the hearts of even the bravest patients! But times have changed, and today’s root canal is no more uncomfortable than your average filling. Using the latest technology, a root canal is faster, safer, pain free and more predictable than ever before.

A root canal may be required if your tooth is painful, sensitive or has an obvious large cavity. The procedure is performed to save a tooth that has been badly damaged by disease, decay or injury. The nerve is firstly removed, canals are cleaned, and an antibiotic is placed to eliminate any infection. At a following appointment, usually 4 weeks later, the root filling will be placed. Following the root canal treatment a crown may be necessary to strengthen the tooth to prevent fracturing.

More than 90% of root treatments are successful, meaning your chances of retaining your natural tooth and avoiding more complex treatments in the future, are excellent. If you implement our preventative care program, your root-treated tooth could last your lifetime.
